Al Bustan Centre & Residence keen on attracting more Russian visitors

in Tourism by
  • Attended the OTDYKH Leisure show 2018 in Moscow to explore new business opportunities and met with potential business partners

The senior management of Al Bustan Centre & Residence, the popular hotel-apartment among tourists and businessmen in the heart of Dubai, recently attended the OTDYKH Leisure show 2018 in Moscow in a bid to increase visibility in the Russian market, explore new business opportunities and met with potential business partners.

During the show, Mr. Yasser Moussa, Executive Assistant Manager, met with representatives from Travel Agencies, Destination Management Companies, Tour Operators, and Online Travel Agencies and discussed future collaborations and initiatives and established association with potential partners.

The Russian market is one of the key markets of Al Bustan Centre & Residence and their presence in the show, the largest tourism event in Russia and the CIS, will heighten awareness about the property and how it can cater to this market.

The region is witnessing a growing trend of increasing demand by international travelers towards mid-scale lodging options and niche segments, including hotel apartments. Dubai is currently seeing a spark not only in leisure travel demand from growing middle class markets, but also in the private sector’s need for business travel across the region.

Yasser Moussa, Executive Assistant Manager, commented “Dubai has set a goal of attracting 23-25 million visitors a year by 2025 and establishing the country as the most favored leisure and business destination. Al Bustan Centre & Residence is focusing on tapping major tourism markets by increasing its presence and promoting its attractiveness as a must-visit destination”.

Moussa El Hayek, Chief Operating Officer of Al Bustan Centre and Residence, said: “Dubai has always been a popular destination among Russians, hence the airlines have introduced additional routes and the government has introduced visa on arrival for Russians making it extremely easy and seamless for Russians to enter the UAE for business or leisure purposes. After our presence at the show promoting the property, we look forward to hosting Russians in the upcoming tourist season in the UAE.”

Meliá Hotels International, Third Most Sustainable Hotel Company In The World In 2018

in Tourism by

The Company makes a strong debut in the ranking made by the sustainable investment agency RobecoSAM, responsible for evaluating companies to define the composition of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a benchmark for ESG investment.

Meliá Hotels International continues to make progress in becoming a leading company in responsibility and sustainability in the hotel industry. This objective encompasses everything from tangible aspects of the business such as tax strategy or Corporate Governance, to more intangible aspects such as risk management, stakeholder relations, ethics, environmental management, human rights and talent management, among many others.

This responsible business strategy forms part of the Strategic Plan led by the Executive Vice President, Gabriel Escarrer, and the entire management team, and has now been acknowledged by RobecoSAM, the most prestigious international agency specialising in sustainable investment. According to the agency, Meliá is the third best company in the world in the “Hotels, resorts and cruise lines” category, and second in Europe, only behind industry giants such as Intercontinental and Hilton.

Companies under evaluation have to respond to an extensive questionnaire every year on issues such as corporate governance systems, climate change strategy or talent management, the results of which determine their sustainability performance. Questions are grouped into three categories: economic, environmental and social, and Meliá came first in the economic and environmental dimensions, where it achieved the highest possible score (100 points). Each category is divided into 20 criteria, and Meliá obtained the highest score in two of them and also led the industry (percentile 100) in criteria such as Crisis and Risk Management, Fiscal Strategy, Environmental Reporting and Energy Eco-efficiency.

The Executive Vice President and CEO of Meliá, Gabriel Escarrer, recalled that “thanks to their importance in the socio-economic and environmental development of destinations and their influence on multiple stakeholders, travel companies play a fundamental role in promoting sustainability. As a company with a family origin and values, Meliá is strongly committed to sustainability on the human, strategic and operational levels”.

Launched in 1999, the family of Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) are an international benchmark for measuring corporate sustainability. Based on the 3,500 largest companies in the world by market capitalisation plus other companies that voluntarily submit to evaluation, it uses a “best in class” approach to select between 10% and 15% (depending on the index) of companies that the evaluation indicates are most sustainable. Although Meliá is not yet part of the group of companies eligible for inclusion in the DJSI, mainly due to its market capitalization and free-float percentage, the results show that it ranks among the best companies in the world in sustainability.

The ranking is ratified every year to take into account constant progress in sustainability and has a major influence on both the global reputation of companies and on investors that increasingly pay greater attention to non-financial factors in investment decisions.

OYO plans to host guests in over 12,000 rooms within 150 hotels across the UAE by 2020. According to data from Dubai Corporation of Tourism & Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism), overall, Dubai hotel room supply is set to reach 132,000 by the end of 2019. The Dubai Tourism also forecasts the hospitality sector to experience sharp, sustained growth over the coming years, with occupied room nights set to reach 35.5 million annually in 2019, representing a 10.2 percent compound annual growth rate over the next 24 months.

Commenting on the developments, Ritesh Agarwal, Founder and CEO, OYO Hotels, said, “With over 170 countries committing to the World Expo 2020, the hospitality sector in the Middle East, and more specifically UAE, is poised to grow substantially and with our market learnings and expertise we are ready to tap this opportunity. Dubai alone will host over 20 million visitors and currently records approximately hotel keys per resident at 29.9 per 1,000 people, which is on the higher side when benchmarked against international hub cities, a clear indicator of the potential of this market. We are really excited to bring our quality living experiences at affordable prices to visitors of Dubai, while helping local hotel owners make best out of the opportunity ahead of them.”

“We are really excited about the opportunity offered by the UAE. This expansion is in line with our quest to support the country’s hospitality ecosystem and creating infrastructure for asset owners to grow and run successful businesses, all of this while ensuring high standards of quality. UNESCO names Pafos this season’s must visit destination

in Tourism by

UNESCO and National Geographic list Cypriot city among top European destinations in “travel differently, travel deeper” round-up

Visitor numbers to Cyprus from the UAE up by 55.5% year-on-year

The Cypriot coastal city of Pafos has been selected as one of this season’s must visit destinations by UNESCO and National Geographic. The listing as one of the top World Heritage Sites in Europe, comes off the back of record visitor numbers from the UAE this summer.

During August this year, Cyprus welcomed a 55.5 per cent increase in visitors from the UAE, compared to August 2017 with Kuwait and Bahrain also seeing increases of 33.1% and 22.8% respectively. The Gulf arrivals contributed to some 66,532 August visitors from Asia.

At just a four-hour-flight from the GCC, Cyprus is one of the most sought-after and accessible destinations for travellers looking for a close-by getaway, and the addition of Pafos to the “World Heritage Journeys” is set to propel this further.

UNESCO’s “World Heritage Journeys”, in collaboration with National Geographic, aims to align travellers with sustainable travel to the most remarkable World Heritage Sites in Europe.

Co-funded by the European Union to promote the top sites, UNESCO has developed a newly launched website (visitworldheritage.com), which encourages visitors to ‘travel differently, travel deeper’ by travelling beyond the major tourist hubs, staying longer in their destinations and experiencing more of what the local region has to offer.

“We are deeply honoured to have Pafos shortlisted as one of the top World Heritage Sites, particularly for our GCC travellers who want to explore Europe but don’t want to take a long flight”, said Mr Marinos Menelaou, CTO’s Acting Director General.

“Pafos, and Cyprus as a whole, offers a wide range of activities, sites and experiences, and the inclusion of Pafos as part of the World Heritage Journeys listing further highlights the city’s appeal for travellers from the gulf region to explore.”

The listing is a result of an 18-month project between the Department of Antiquities and Cyprus Tourism Organisation to develop inspiring and educational content to be featured on the platform for viewers.

Boasting stunning beaches and a dramatic coastline with the mythological ‘Petra tou Romiou’, also known as Aphrodite’s rock, where Aphrodite, the goddess of love, is said to have rose from the waves, at its heart, Pafos is a destination that appeals to all. Steeped in ancient mythology, from ancient ruin site The Tomb of the Kings, the Pafos Fort, and lively restaurants along the coast, Pafos is fun for the whole family, regardless of where they are travelling from.

Pafos is situated a scenic 1.5 hour drive from Larnaca International Airport, with direct flights operated with Emirates Airlines from Dubai, Gulf Air from Bahrain and Qatar Airways from Doha

Dubai plays host to inaugural Arabian Travel Market Advisory Board

in Tourism by
  • Middle East’s travel and tourism leaders come together to discuss untapped opportunities and key challenges facing the industry today

Reed Travel Exhibitions, organiser of the annual Arabian Travel Market (ATM) showcase, hosted their inaugural Advisory Board Meeting at the Address Boulevard, Downtown Dubai, bringing together travel and tourism leaders to discuss the untapped opportunities and key challenges facing the industry.

ATM’s Advisory Board was set up to provide counsel on industry themes, challenges, growth opportunities and future strategies in the Middle East travel and tourism sector – as well as to help facilitate current business and marketing plans.

Board attendees included Mohammad Al Bulooki, Chief Operational Officer, Etihad Airways; Olivier Harnisch, Chief Executive Officer, Emaar Hospitality; Haitham Mattar, Chief Executive Officer, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority; Anita Mehra, Senior Vice President Communication & Reputation, Dubai Airports; John Davis, Chief Executive Officer, Colliers International; Mohamed Awadalla, Chief Executive Officer, TIME Hotels; Bassel Al Nahlaoui, Managing Director, Careem; Mark Willis, Chief Executive Officer Middle East & Africa, Accor Hotels Group; Mohanad Sharafuddin, Chairman, Arabian Falcon Holidays and Muhammad Chbib, Chief Executive Officer, Tajawal.

Nick Pilbeam, Divisional Director, Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE), said: “The Advisory Board was initiated to allow ATM to get closer to the industry and to listen and learn from some of the region’s key hospitality leaders as they discuss the industry’s key trends, while brainstorming topics and issues that should be debated at next year’s show.

“In addition to addressing regional challenges and opportunities, the Advisory Board also stressed the importance of looking at global shifts, trends and events that will impact and shape the future of the travel and tourism industry here in the Middle East, which we will make sure to incorporate into next year’s seminar agenda,” Pilbeam said.

Throughout the board meeting RTE shared findings from a market research report commissioned by ATM. The report interviewed exhibitors from all relevant sectors of the industry, including hotels, tourism organistions, car rental, airlines and cruises.

This research highlighted the challenges exhibitors are facing in today’s market and the extent to which they are impacting marketing and sales strategies, financial performance, leadership, HR and training.

Based on these findings, ATM has developed a list of areas which it will look at in the short-to-medium term to address these challenges. These include providing new buyers, better coverage of specific niches and improved market insights and education amongst others.

The planning for ATM 2019, which will take place at Dubai World Trade Centre from 28 April – 1 May 2019, got underway as board members discussed next year’s theme – cutting-edge technology and innovation – while brainstorming other topics and issues for debate at next year’s show.

Pilbeam added: Meeting with key industry representatives to hear their views on ATM, market performance and current trends is invaluable as we work to build the agenda for next year’s show and continue to strengthen our offerings – providing more business opportunities for our exhibitors.”

ATM – considered by industry professionals as a barometer for the Middle East and North Africa tourism sector, welcomed over 39,000 people to its 2018 event, showcasing the largest exhibition in the history of the show, with hotels comprising 20% of the floor area.

With a spotlight on technology and innovation, ATM 2019 will build on the success of this year’s edition with a host of seminar sessions discussing the ongoing unprecedented digital disruption, and the emergence of innovative technologies that will fundamentally alter the way in which the hospitality industry operates in the region.

Arabian Travel Market 2019 will take place at Dubai World Trade Centre from 28 April – 1 May 2019.
