  • Dubai wins “Destination of the Year” at Seatrade Cruise Awards 2018

  • Dubai Cruise’s international marketing efforts include three-city roadshow across Europe, in collaboration with Emirates airline and leading cruise lines

Dubai has been adjudged the Destination of the Year at the Seatrade Cruise Awards 2018, in recognition of the work done by the Cruise Tourism department of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) in pioneering cruise tourism in the region and positioning the city as a hub for winter sun cruising. Considered to be one of the most reputed titles within the cruise industry, the prestigious accolade was presented at a special ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal, as part of the Seatrade Cruise Med 2018.

Dubai Tourism exhibited at Seatrade Cruise Med, under the Cruise Arabia banner, bringing together the tourism authorities of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Bahrain to showcase the breadth of the region’s offerings, and to position the Arabian Gulf as the perfect destination for winter sun cruising. The delegation representing Dubai at the convention included members of the Dubai Cruise Committee (Dubai Tourism, DP World, Emirates airline, The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai), as well as the representatives from the Dubai Expo 2020 and Meraas Holding, the developer of Dubai Harbour Project along with many other private sector stakeholders. The exhibition enabled all parties to explore various networking and business opportunities with leading global brands and cruise lines, in addition to deployment and homeporting opportunities for the upcoming 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 cruise seasons.

Commenting on the award win, His Excellency, Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General, Dubai Tourism, said: “Winning this prestigious award is a true testament to our ongoing efforts to not only bolster the profile of Dubai as a global hub for cruising, but also to raise the awareness of the destination’s overall tourism offerings to a global audience. Cruise tourism has undoubtedly become a key industry for the Gulf and we are dedicated to educating consumers around the world about the region as the winter cruising destination. This success, of course, could not have been possible without our valued network of industry partners DP World, Emirates airline, Dubai Immigration, Dubai Customs and various other public and private sector stakeholders,  who share our commitment to working within a collaborative framework to consolidate the city’s position as the cruise hub of the region, and boost the growth of the emirate’s cruise industry and tourism sector at large.”

His Excellency, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, DP World, said: “The Seatrade ‘Destination of the Year’ Award recognises Dubai’s position as the region’s leader in cruise tourism with its world class facilities and tourist attractions. As operators of Mina Rashid Cruise Terminals, DP World is proud to support the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to turn the city into a preferred global destination for cruise tourists.  We will continue to offer our expertise in catering to the rapidly growing demand for sophisticated services. DP World is also dedicated to creating a unique luxury experience, especially as we aim to receive one million cruise tourists a year by 2020.

“Our state-of-the-art Hamdan bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal at Mina Rashid, set to be the largest facility in the world, is equipped to meet the growing number of cruise passengers and is capable of handling 18,000 passengers a day. Mina Rashid is homeport to the top global ocean-going cruise operators. Between the terminal’s opening in 2014 and 2017, cruise ship calls to Dubai rose by 68 per cent, and we are expecting to see over 700,000 visitors for the 2018-19 season.”

Preceding the Seatrade exhibition, Dubai Tourism organised an extensive roadshow across Europe, conducted in partnership with Emirates airline and key cruise lines such as Costa Cruises, Aida Cruises, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Pullmantur Cruises who home-port in Dubai. Hosted in Vienna, Paris and Zurich, this tour forms part of Dubai Tourism’s ongoing efforts to raise the profile of Dubai as a global hub for cruising.

The roadshow was a strategic platform that was created to connect the cruise lines and the travel trade from these key source markets to increase cruise tourist arrivals throughout to Dubai from those markets during the upcoming 2018/19 cruise season.  It also saw successful networking and business opportunities with the travel trade from the respective markets and leading brands in the global cruise industry.

With Dubai fast becoming a favoured destination amongst international cruise lines and cruise tourists, the emirate welcomed over 625,000 cruise tourists to the city during the 2016/2017 season. Looking ahead, Dubai’s cruise industry is set for another strong performance during the upcoming 2018/2019 season, with more than 700,000 cruise tourists expected to visit the city. This is in line with Dubai Cruise Tourism’s strategic goal of welcoming one million cruise tourists by the 2020/2021 season, with the emirate serving as the winter home port for 10 of the world’s leading international cruise lines.

Advances in technology to help UAE’s amusement & entertainment industry

in Business by

Embed to launch ticketing and booking management platform during DEAL 2019, to be held from 25 – 27 March 2019 at Dubai World Trade Centre

GCC countries have been working towards diversifying their economies to become independent of petroleum. One of the major focus areas for the nations of the region has been tourism and the subsequent investment in the entertainment industry. In an attempt to provide exclusive and immersive experience, the industry has had to rely majorly upon new technological advances.

According to industry expert, Sharif Rahman, CEO, International Expo Consults (IEC), organisers of DEAL 2019, “The amusement, entertainment and leisure industry in the GCC countries have come a long way. UAE boasts of multiple, award winning entertainment venues prevalent in the country. With host to multiple theme parks such as IMG World of Adventures, Legoland, Motiongate, Bollywood Parks; and Ferrari World and Warner Bros in driving distance, Dubai is definitely the theme park capital of the region”.

Rosa Tahmaseb, Managing Director EMEA – Helix Leisure, said “The Industry in the Middle East is interesting at the moment, with various factors affecting the economy we are seeing a slight change in spending patterns. However, the addition of Saudi Arabia opening up the entertainment industry will surely have a big impact on both vendors and operators alike.

One of the reasons that the entertainment industry has found success in the region is its early adoption of the latest technology. Virtual reality and augmented reality has been around for a long time, particularly the former, but its application in theme park rides and games has been pretty recent. The region has welcomed this new change whole heartedly and with open arms in the form of VR park in Dubai Mall that was launched earlier this year.

Technology has also helped in consolidating the back end operations of the park. Firms such as Embed, a Helix Leisure company, who deal in debit card technology, have been providing point of sale and revenue management technology to the amusement parks and FECs around the world.

As part of the upcoming DEAL 2019 event Embed would be introducing their ticketing and booking management platform ‘Booking Boss’, an end-to-end, web-based ticketing and booking management solution for high-performing attractions. Booking Boss centralizes all admissions revenue and since it’s a cloud based platform, it allows for seamless connectivity with the world’s largest database of online travel agents (OTAs) via the Channel Manager.  By centralizing admissions into Booking Boss, the customers benefit with increased business visibility which results in the ability for informed business decisions, increased revenue opportunities, improved internal processes and streamlined customer ticketing and booking experiences

“We have had a long standing and fulfilling relationship with DEAL 2019. This year we will showcase Booking Boss. It provides attractions with the option to centralize ticketing and booking management.  The platform manages bookings no matter which channel it comes in but also arms the business with a variety of tools such as capacity management, scheduling, re-allocation and auto-communications.   This enables attractions the opportunity to maximise selling opportunities and ultimately, increase profit margins”, added Rosa.

DEAL 2019 would mark the silver anniversary of the show. For the past two and a half decades, DEAL has represented the largest gathering of entertainment and leisure industry’s key players and visitors from the Middle East, Africa, US, Mediterranean and Asian countries. DEAL has shaped the region’s entertainment industry during this time and has brought together opinion leaders and high-tech innovations all on one platform. Opening its doors for the 25th time, DEAL 2019 is scheduled to be held between the 25th-27th March 2019 at Halls 1, 2, 3 and 4 at the World Trade Centre, Dubai.

Child Safety Campaign to Host Reading Sessions at Sharjah Children’s Film Fest

in Social by

Three sessions will be organised at the Sharjah International Children’s Film Festival

The Child Safety Campaign (CSC), an initiative of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, will organise a series of reading sessions for children at the upcoming sixth edition of the Sharjah International Children’s Film Festival (SICFF 2018).

The reading sessions will feature three storybooks that Child Safety Campaign published in April 2018, in Arabic and Braille languages, and will teach young visitors at SCIFF about their rights, how to stay safe outside of their home, and online.

The first session takes place on October 15 at 10am, featuring the storybook ‘Tumtum the Duck’, written by Sahar Naja and illustrated by Fadi Fadhel. The story addresses how children should handle requests from strangers. It is about a duckling that goes out for a walk but comes across a wolf who tries to lure her and persuade her to go with him. Fortunately, she remembers her mother’s advice and refuses.

The second session takes place on October 17, featuring ‘My Grandmother the Tree’, written by Sabah Deeby and illustrated by Sylvia Vivanco. Addressing children’s rights, the story emphasises the importance of helping children to fulfil their dreams and protecting them from all forms of negligence, exploitation, mistreatment and abuse. The story is about a tree that comes across a little girl who is denied her right to education and is not allowed to attend school. The tree transforms into a lady and solves the girl’s problem as well as other kids, by fulfilling their aspirations and wishes to go to school, at the same time providing them with a safe environment in which they can live, play and gain access to education.

On October 18, the final session will feature ‘The Little Jerboa’, written by Reem al Qarq and illustrated by Rana Qadry. The story addresses children’s day-to-day lives on social media. It depicts the virtual life that children experience and how they could be harmed by strangers that pretend to be friends. The session will also provide advice on how to handle online threats.

Hanadi Al Yafei, Director of SCFA, and Head of the Organising Committee of CSC, said: “The Sharjah International Children’s Film Festival presents a unique opportunity to reach children of all ages and nationalities and their parents, to enhance their awareness about child safety.”

“Storybooks and reading sessions are an ideal opportunity to teach children the basics of how to stay safe in their daily lives, in addition to enabling us to reach their parents and educate them on children’s rights. Such contributions ensure the advancement of our society and nation.”

Al Yafei commended SICFF’s efforts in the development of children’s mental faculties and skills, educating them on new fun-filled concepts that could develop to become a hobby, passion or ambition, in addition to fostering their awareness on handling various situations.

The storybooks were launched by Child Safety Campaign – in cooperation with Kalimat Publishing, an imprint of Kalimat Group that is dedicated to publishing children’s books, and supported by 1001 Titles, a Knowledge Without Borders Initiative – during its participation at the 10th Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (SCRF) in April 2018, in order to raise awareness about child safety and child rights.

Medical Experts Urge Women to Combat Breast Cancer with Preventive Screenings

in Health by

Early screening and detection can improve the chances of survival by 95 to 100 percent

Breast cancer is one of the major causes of cancer-related deaths in women in the Middle East. According to the latest figures released by the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, there are 4,500 new cases of cancer reported in the UAE alone, with breast, colorectal and lung cancers acquiring top spots. World Health Organization report shows that, compared to its neighbouring countries, the UAE has a higher incident rate of 36.7 cases per 100 women.

“Breast cancer is a growing condition with women in the region. However, many women identify the condition only at an advanced stage,” said Dr. Aref Hammam, Consultant – General Surgery at Bareen International Hospital in MBZ City, Abu Dhabi.

So far in 2018, it is estimated that 627,000 women have died from breast cancer across the globe, which is about 15 percent of all cancer-related deaths among women.

“Breast cancer has four stages, defined by the prevalence and size of the tumor. The chances of survival are between 95 to 100 percent if the breast cancer is detected at stage one.  But if the condition is detected at stage two, the survival chance decreases to 86 percent.  If breast cancer is detected at stage three, the survival rate goes down to 57 percent. These figures underline the importance of screening and early detection in order to improve the chances of survival,” said Dr. Nazura Siddiqi, Specialist – Obstetrics and Gynecology at Bareen International Hospital.

Aside from age, gender, and family history, prolonged exposure to estrogen, in various forms, can also increase the risk of breast cancer in women.  Those who began menstruating at an early age (below 13 years), those who have not given birth, those who have not breast fed, those who had their first child after age 30, those who have used oral contraceptives, those who had late menopause (after age 50), those who have used hormone replacement therapy have higher chance of developing breast cancer. “Unhealthy lifestyle choices – drinking alcohol, smoking, physical inactivity, obesity, and unhealthy food preferences such as fast food and processed food, also significantly contribute in increasing the risk of having breast cancer.  It is strongly recommended that women who belong to any of these categories to be proactive about regular screenings.  Early detection is the key,” added Dr. Nazura.

“Healthy eating habits and exercise are beneficial for many reasons.  Exercise alone can reduce inflammation, improve the immune system and lead to a drop in body fat, which is associated with a lower breast cancer risk,” added Dr. Aref.  In a 2015 JAMA Oncology study, researchers found that about 300 minutes of physical activity per week is ideal for breast cancer prevention.

In an endeavour to raise awareness about breast cancer and help those whose lives have been affected by the condition, Bareen International Hospital offers FREE consultations and clinical breast examinations for the general public. Moreover, the hospital regularly hosts lectures and workshops at schools, universities, private companies and government units for this month.  The lectures tackle breast cancer risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and self-breast exams.

A launch event open to the community along with Bareen management, staff, and guests/patients and with Chief Guest Ms. Dana Al Hammadi, Emirati social icon, shall be staged at the main lobby of the hospital.  The event promotes good health and wellness and raises the awareness on the significance of early detection.  There will be pink balloon release, cake-cutting, and banner signing to support the cause.

In addition, the hospital distributes literatures on the importance of preventive screening, dons a pink look with kiosks, banners, and screen ads, and turns its whole facade pink at night to echo its strong support to the community.
