DUBAI COLLEGE OF TOURISM HOLDS WORKSHOP FOR MODHESH WORLD VOLUNTEERS

The Dubai College of Tourism, part of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) hosted a workshop on customer service for all the young volunteers of Modhesh World, with training on how to provide the best service to visitors to the edutainment destination.

Mariam Al Maeeni, Director, Industry Nationalisation, Dubai College of Tourism, said: “At Dubai College of Tourism, we strive to attract young members of society who have a desire to volunteer and be part of Dubai Tourism’s numerous events throughout the year. There is currently a specific focus on youth, who are given top priority by the College as it seeks to enhance their presence in Dubai’s tourism workforce spanning hospitality, retail and entertainment. We have, therefore, been working to organize specialized workshops that are in line with the nature of the event.”

Al Maeeni added: “Modhesh World volunteers joined a training workshop on customer service before the event kicked off, taking part in the professional guidance day to help prepare them to deal with and serve Modhesh World visitors – and following the training, we are truly confident in their capabilities. They will be deployed across the destination to sell tickets, welcome visitors to Modhesh World, supervise the events, activities, and the theatre, and to guide visitors to the events and games locations, as well as answering all their questions along the way.”

The 19th edition of Modhesh World started on 7 June at Dubai World Trade Centre and will run until 25 August. It is organized by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) and one of the most anticipated summer family events, providing different activities and events combining fun, entertainment and education.

Andre Russell ready to captain and learn from Afridi.

The Jamaica Tallawahs have announced that this year they will be captained by Andre Russel in the Hero Caribbean Premier League. After recently returning to cricket following a 12 month suspension, Russell will be re-joining the Tallawahs for the 2018 Hero CPL season and he cannot wait to get started in the tournament.

“It’s a good feeling, honestly, I missed out last year due to one-year suspension. I’m looking forward to it, not just looking forward to play but looking forward to being the captain for the Jamaica Tallawahs, as well and looking forward to doing a good job.

“We have a very good, balanced team. We have a team that is not just about the names, it’s all about what they can do as well and how quickly they can change the game. I truly believe in all- rounders in T20 cricket and I think that’s what we have. I think we have guys that can bat and bowl and once you have eight guys in a team that can do that, I think you have a good team on paper.”

This year Russell will be captaining Shahid Afridi, a player with a huge amount of experience in the T20 format, and he is looking forward to having him as a teammate at the Tallawahs.

“It’s going to be interesting, I’ve played against Shahid before, he’s a good guy. Even in Dubai after we played, we go out on a boat together, just enjoy each other’s company. To be around a guy like Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Ahmed Shehzad and all these guys, it just show a different type of how they live, and how simple they are apart from the game. But, it’s good to have [Afridi] in the CPL this year and not just playing against him, playing with him as well, because I hope I can learn a few things and take it along with me.”

Russell says that the Hero CPL is vital to the growth of cricket in the region, and is keen to see Caribbean cricketers show their passion for the sport at the tournament.

“[CPL] is very important. I think just like how passionate the guys in India are, just coming from IPL, and seeing how passionate these guys are about getting to the top four, winning the cup and looking forward to every practice session and everything. It means a lot to the local guys and I think that’s what it’s supposed to mean to us as well, because once you’re in your home town I think that’s where you want to be and it’s just going to make you express yourself a lot more.”

Russell says he has set himself personal targets for the tournament ahead, but he doesn’t want to make those public. He would rather leave those as targets for himself.

“I always set personal goals but I don’t let it out loud because I don’t want to say I want 20 wickets, 30 wickets and I only get 10. It’s always good to have your personal goals but I don’t like to say it out loud. Every player want to get wickets, take a lot of catches, score runs, but I have my personal goals and I just hope I can achieve them.”

Expo Centre Sharjah partners with EID Sports to launch Sports City

Sharjah and the Northern Emirates are set to get their first indoor summer sports arena.

Expo Centre Sharjah will host the debut edition of Sports City on July 5, in partnership with EIDS Sports. Aiming to court enthusiasts with some hard core sporting action throughout the summer vacation period, the 60-day event will be held until September 8 at the halls of Expo Centre Sharjah.

“In the UAE, the summers are known for their harsh and unforgiving heat, forcing the youth to stay indoors. With Sports City, we are changing that by offering them an environment free of climatic vagaries. Parents are guaranteed a safe environment where there will be a slew of sporting activities that can keep their children engaged throughout the vacation period,” said Mr. Sultan Shattaf, Marketing & Business Development Director of Expo Centre Sharjah.

At Sports City, a fully climate-controlled environment will help children of all ages enjoy playing their favourite sports during the full vacation period. Facilities include soccer fields, tracks, courts, pitches, tourneys, fitness centres, services of coaches and trainers.

Shattaf added, “Expo Centre Sharjah is proud to partner with EIDS Sports Company to provide the most exciting athletic, recreation and fitness facility for the youth who can indulge in their favourite sporting activity without dealing with the searing heat or dust storms outside.”

Apart from a wide range of activities for all age groups of children, Sports City would not let parents sit idle; there will be enough activities that can keep them engaged within the arena. Apart from individual participation, Sport City is open to groups, clubs, associations, corporates and other entities who seek to take advantage of such a unique facility in the region.

Mr. Majid Bashir, CEO of EIDS Sports, said, “Sedentary lifestyle leads to deadly epidemics like Obesity, Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease and many kinds of Cancer. And yet, large sections of our society are unable to develop active lifestyle habits. Sports City is an initiative that aims to activate our communities and help develop healthy lifestyle habits. Research has shown that it takes an average of 66 days to develop a new habit – we are hoping that 60 days of Sports City will help kick-start an active lifestyle for participants.”

Spread across 6000 square metres, the Sports City at Expo Centre will have multiple tracks, fields and courts for nearly two dozen sporting activities that include football, cricket, basketball, volleyball, rugby, tennis, badminton, squash, skate-board, table tennis, fitness centre, racing track and other athletic programmes.

The Sports City will be open from 11 am to 11 pm daily and on Fridays from 2 pm to 11 pm.

Zayed University students to participate in ‘The Intercultural Project’

The students will display their creativity over the month and visitors to the exhibition can vote for the favorite artwork. 4 students from Dubai and Abu Dhabi who receive the highest number of votes will be named winners of the contest and will then, accompanied by the Project Manager, Dr. Benedetta Paravia and a tutor from Zayed University, travel to Italy to participate in ‘The Intercultural Project’, a successful educational trip happening since 2005.

Throughout their time in Italy, the group – courtesy of Gargash – Alfa Romeo, which will sponsor the trip – will travel in true Italian style, being driven across the country in the very latest Alfa Romeo vehicles.

The students expressed their joy and gratitude for the successful exhibition as all the visitors and guests were very much interested on the artworks and the story behind each creation.

Mariam Al Fahim said: “Thank 1000 times for this great and amazing opportunity which allowed me to go through the best experience of my life. This made me and my family happy and proud”.

Rawdha Al Ketbi said: “Thank you so much for organizing and giving us this opportunity. It was an amazing experience and we had great time”.

“The intercultural Project is a special educational program that we have been running since 2005” – said Dr. Benedetta Paravia, Project Manager. “It was devised to bring the European and Arabic cultures closer together, with a special focus on the UAE and Italy. It also promotes intercultural dialogue and the understanding of cultural diversity, ultimately benefitting Emiratisation by motivating and encouraging the students.”

Founded in Milan, Italy way back in 1910, five key elements have made Alfa Romeo one of the world’s most desirable automotive brands – advanced technology, lightness and efficiency, performance and dynamism, distinctive Italian design and a unique spirit. The exhibition opened June 13th 9pm and runs until July 13th at the Gargash Alfa Romeo showroom on Sheikh Zayed Road, next to the Gold and Diamond Park.

TIME Hotels to house family who lost their home in Ajman fire

UAE-headquartered TIME Hotels is set to house a family who lost their home due to a fire, while the Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi Charity Foundation reconstructs the damage.

TIME Ruby Hotel Apartments in Sharjah will host the family for one month following an appeal from the office of Sheikha Azza bint Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Director-General of the Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi Charity Foundation.

The fire broke out in Ajman on Saturday 2nd June, destroying the family’s entire home.

Mohamed Awadalla, CEO, TIME Hotels, said: “It is important, especially during the Holy Month of Ramadan, that we remember those less fortunate than ourselves. The office of Sheikha Azza bint Abdullah Al Nuaimi was seeking the help of hotels or hotel apartments to re-house the family who unfortunately lost their home, and we are delighted to be able to support this tremendous gesture.”

TIME Hotels is embracing the Year of Zayed by strengthening the impact it is making on local and regional communities through its wide-ranging Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives for 2018.

In July, around 60 to 80 team members from TIME Grand Plaza Hotel will donate blood at Latifa Hospital in Dubai. This initiative in collaboration with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) aims to collect blood in a bid to help patients in need, particularly those suffering from Thalassemia.

TIME Hotels will also be participating in a Quench Your Thirst Day. This activity will see TIME team members distribute between 100 and 200 bottles of water outside TIME Grand Plaza Hotel to taxi and bus drivers.

Earlier this month, TIME Hotels distributed 300 Iftar boxes to mosque visitors prior to prayer. The boxes included chicken biryani, raita, green salad, Arabic bread, a Ramadan sweet, dates and a bottle of water.

Other plans for the remainder of the year include a walk to raise awareness for breast cancer and a community clean-up campaign as well as a Beat Diabetes walk and a can collection day.

There will be several team-building events where gifts will be exchanged between all TIME Hotels’ team members. A talent competition, the annual staff party and the popular waiter race will also take place over the course of the coming six months.

“Over the years, TIME Hotels has been involved in a range of activities designed to give back to and support the communities we operate in. Everything we do is backed by our commitment to have a positive impact, we don’t want to just put a smile on somebody’s face today, we want a more substantial and longer-lasting influence than that,” concluded Awadalla.
